PATIENT STORIES

One of the most effective ways to shift cultural beliefs about abortion is through storytelling. Stories have the power to change conversations and beliefs – affecting how the media and people in our community perceive and talk about abortion; and influence our leaders passing laws impacting reproductive rights.

The Women’s Centers provide journals where patients can share their stories while they wait for their care. Below are excerpts from these writings, edited to protect privacy and confidentiality.

I am a single mom of a wonderful 5 year old. I am a decorated military vet with 2 B.A.s from [a prestigious] university.
This can happen to anyone and don’t be rejectful of your decision. I’ve seen what this world can be like. Your choice doesn’t make you incompetent. It does not automatically mean you fit a stereotype, doesn’t mean you came from a bad family.

Getting an abortion does not define who you are but adds you to able to be who you need to be.

Don’t let what other people think influence what you need to do.

You are the one who is responsible for you. This is your choice. Decision. Not every choice is easy. Not everyone has the options to choose what is best for them.

You made your choice. Be comfortable with it. Overtime accept it and be happy that you had this option.

An abortion doesn’t define who you are, it doesn’t make you a certain type of person.

Help when you’re ready and when you are healed to help other women realize that the best decision may not be the easiest.

But when it is all said and done, it’s all up to you.

What you want to do.

Stop, think, breathe, analyze, smile.

YOU GOT THIS FAR! KEEP MOVING FORWARD!

I’m 7 weeks and 3 days according to my ultrasound.

I don’t feel ashamed or scared at all. I’m just grateful that this option is available.

Just recently Oklahoma passed a bill to ban all abortions in their state. Every women deserves a choice.

In Ireland all abortions are banned as well.

I’m thankful. I’m not ready to bring a child or have responsibility for another. I’m in college for nursing. I can’t support a baby.

Remember to vote and support your local representative to keep to keep this process available.

My story, my story. I’m a mom already and I’m trying to go college. I really want to be someone who can help people. If I have another kid I’m going to have to live with my sister longer and put my dream on hold while I look for another job to support 2 kids.

It really sucks to make a decision out of desperation to have it come down to $, but the system really isn’t set up to support me -my family- my education.

To anyone who reads this:

Make the decision that is best for you. Know yourself. Love yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you who you are.
